Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs have reached an agreement on a five-year contract extension. The deal, which was announced by the team on Friday, is valued at a projected $252 million, according to a team source. This extension will commence in the 2027-28 season, following the conclusion of Wembanyama’s rookie contract.
The financial terms of the agreement were not officially disclosed by either side. However, a person familiar with the negotiations indicated that the extension could potentially exceed $250 million if a player option in the final season is exercised. Wembanyama confirmed the agreement on social media, stating, “Spurs family, I’m here to stay. Whatever it takes.”
Contract Details and Team Flexibility
The new agreement for Wembanyama is structured to begin with a salary around $43.5 million in the 2027-28 season, with subsequent increases. The 7-foot-4 center from France would have a $57.5 million option for the 2031-32 season. This deal represents a discount from what Wembanyama could have potentially commanded, as he reportedly could have agreed to a deal topping $300 million over five years.
Wembanyama’s decision to accept a lesser amount is seen as a move to provide the Spurs with greater financial flexibility. This flexibility is particularly important given the team’s young core and the anticipated contracts for other developing players in the coming years. The deal starts with Wembanyama making 25 percent of the NBA salary cap figure.
Forgoing a “supermax” extension could save the Spurs approximately $50 million over the duration of the extension, depending on future cap numbers. This could translate to roughly $10 million in cap space each season if Wembanyama continues to achieve high honors, such as being named to an All-NBA team or repeating as Defensive Player of the Year in 2026-27.
This financial strategy is expected to be particularly relevant in the 2029-30 season, when core players like Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper may transition from their rookie deals to max or near-max contracts. Additionally, players such as Devin Vassell, Carter Bryant, and Julian Champagnie will likely require new deals. The Spurs recently signed Champagnie to a three-year, $45 million deal on June 29, aiming to secure their long-term rotation around Wembanyama.
Wembanyama’s Impact and Recent Season
Wembanyama, at 22 years old, has quickly established himself as a dominant force in the league. He led the Spurs to the NBA Finals in his first playoff appearance, evolving significantly throughout the season. He finished third in MVP voting for the season and received First-Team All-NBA honors.
During the past season, Wembanyama was the Most Valuable Player of the Western Conference finals. He averaged 25 points and 11.5 rebounds, helping San Antonio achieve a 62-20 record and secure the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference. He has also led the league in blocks per game in all three of his NBA seasons.
The Spurs’ season concluded with a loss in the NBA Finals to the New York Knicks in five games. Wembanyama reflected on the experience, stating, “It’s painful. It’s painful. But I’m not running away from that. I’m using it to fuel me. … I’m not satisfied with not winning. But as I said, this is the biggest lesson of my life. As a team, there’s no better experience than what we just lived.”
He also noted, “I don’t think we could have learned more and gained more experience in one playoff run and in one season, and personally in 18 months. It’s been hard and full of lessons.” After entering last season as playoff hopefuls, the Spurs finished as title contenders and are expected to be among the favorites in the upcoming season. Wembanyama will make approximately $16.8 million in the coming season, which is the final year of his rookie contract.
