Trade Delay and Investigation
The trade involving Kawhi Leonard to the Toronto Raptors has been put on hold. This pause is due to an ongoing NBA investigation into allegations that the Los Angeles Clippers and Leonard circumvented the salary cap. The investigation, which began last September, concerns a reported no-show endorsement deal with Aspiration, a company that is now defunct. The NBA had previously warned Toronto about potential issues with the trade due to this investigation when it was initially agreed upon in principle on June 30.
The league reiterated this point when the two teams scheduled a call to finalize the deal, leading the Raptors to pause the trade until the investigation concludes. Some within the NBA had anticipated an announcement regarding the investigation’s results at a Board of Governors meeting. However, a league spokesperson indicated that the law firm’s findings are expected in the coming weeks. Many observers have expressed bewilderment at the duration of the investigation.
The NBA‘s handling of the situation has drawn scrutiny, with some suggesting the league should have addressed Leonard’s status earlier. The league was reportedly reactive to trade talks, stepping in after the Clippers and Raptors were already deep into negotiations. Sources briefed on the matter indicated that the Raptors were informed days before the deal was agreed upon that they would be proceeding at their own risk, assuming responsibility for any penalties against Leonard if his contract were voided after the trade.
Player Status and Team Considerations
Despite the delay, Kawhi Leonard was in Toronto earlier this week when Kyle Lowry signed a ceremonial one-day contract to retire as a Raptor. Leonard has also reportedly passed his physical. Additionally, extension talks between Leonard, who is in the final year of his contract, and the Raptors have begun.
The trade delay provides the Raptors with an opportunity to explore expanding the deal to include a third team. The objective of such an expansion would be to offload another contract to a third club, preventing Toronto from taking on more salary than it sends out. Under the current structure, the team would be hard-capped at the first tax apron. The inclusion of a potential third team would not impact the main deal between the Clippers and Raptors.
The Raptors are reportedly unlikely to pursue former players DeMar DeRozan and Jonas Valanciunas. This decision is partly attributed to the team’s financial situation. If the trade proceeds as currently structured, the Raptors would not have sufficient room under the first apron to sign a player to a veteran’s minimum contract.
Summer League and Player Development
The Raptors are also focusing on their offseason development plan for Collin Murray-Boyles, a 2025 lottery pick. The team hopes to see the 2025/26 All-Rookie selection enhance his game during Summer League. However, Murray-Boyles was absent from Friday’s opener due to a finger sprain. Second-year guard Alijah Martin was also sidelined because of knee inflammation.
In other Summer League news, AJ Dybantsa and the Washington Wizards defeated Darryn Peterson and the Utah Jazz. Additionally, a matchup between former Michigan players Yaxel Lendeborg and Morez Johnson Jr. took place in the Warriors versus Mavericks game. The NBA investigation into Kawhi Leonard‘s Aspiration affair has stalled his trade from the Clippers to the Raptors, as discussed on The Kevin O’Connor Show.

The NBA‘s investigation into the alleged salary cap circumvention by the Clippers and Kawhi Leonard began last September.
