Public Perception of Conor McGregor
The return of Conor McGregor to the Octagon has generated discussion regarding his public image, particularly in Ireland. While he was once an overwhelmingly positive figure in his home country, his public perception has evolved over time. His success in a niche sport during a national recession initially brought him widespread acclaim, leading to him being voted the 2016 RTE Sports Personality of the Year.
However, a shift in public sentiment began around the time of his boxing match with Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2017. Subsequent incidents, including a homophobic slur used after a teammate’s loss and various legal issues, contributed to a change in how he was viewed by some segments of the Irish public. Reports indicate that a civil court finding of liability in a sexual assault case in November 2024 further impacted his public standing in Ireland, leading to calls for a criminal case reopening and boycotts of McGregor-related products by some retailers.
Despite these developments, there remains a segment of fans in Ireland who continue to support McGregor, even if their enthusiasm is expressed more privately than in previous years. The event is expected to draw significant attention globally, with billboards in Las Vegas promoting the fighter’s return.
The main card of UFC 329 is scheduled to kick off on Saturday at 9pm ET/6pm PT, available live on Paramount+ in the United States.
