Teams Eyeing the 2027 National Title
The college basketball landscape continues to evolve, with Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) funds playing a role in retaining players who might have otherwise entered the NBA Draft. This has contributed to a stronger product and continuity among top teams. While the NCAA Tournament often brings surprises, a group of contenders is emerging as favorites for the 2027 men’s national championship.
Building a championship team typically involves certain characteristics: strong interior presence, a player capable of scoring late in games against set defenses, and role players who excel in possession battles. Additionally, most national championship teams over the last two decades have featured a first-round draft pick on their roster.
Key Contenders and Their Strengths
The Illinois Fighting Illini are aiming for their first national title, returning key players from last year’s Final Four team. The team features the 7’1″ Ivisic twins, Tomislav and Zvonimir Ivisic, providing significant size. David Mirkovic adds a versatile forward, while Stefan Vaaks joins from Providence as a lead creator. Freshman Quentin Coleman is also a notable addition, capable of playing both on and off the ball.
Duke Blue Devils have assembled a strong roster through a combination of player retention and new additions. The return of Patrick Ngongba is expected to provide a high floor for the team, with John Blackwell joining from Wisconsin to bolster the backcourt alongside Cayden Boozer and Caleb Foster. Dame Sarr is anticipated to be a strong wing stopper and transition scorer. The team also features 17-year-old freshman Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje, who is considered a top prospect for the 2028 NBA Draft.
The Florida Gators, despite an upset in the second round of last season’s NCAA Tournament, are expected to start the season ranked highly due to significant roster retention from their 2025 national championship team. Thomas Haugh, Alex Condon, and Rueben Chinyelu all withdrew from the draft to return, forming a core with considerable length and experience. Boogie Fland, a floor general, is also back and could emerge as a star lead guard. Urban Klavzar is another efficient offensive guard who could see increased usage if Denzel Aberdeen does not receive a waiver.
The Tennessee Volunteers have significantly revamped their roster through the transfer portal. This includes Juke Harris, a junior guard from Wake Forest, and Terrence Hill Jr., a three-level scorer from VCU. Other notable additions include Dai Dai Ames from Cal, Jalen Haralson from Notre Dame, and Tyler Lundblade from Belmont. Miles Rubin, a transfer from Loyola-Chicago, is expected to provide rim protection and lob finishing. This new group aims to improve Tennessee’s offensive firepower and potentially break the program’s streak of never reaching the Final Four.
The Texas Longhorns have also accumulated talent, with Colorado transfer Isaiah Johnson bringing quick ball-handling and efficient scoring. Matas Vokietaitis returns in the middle, providing a strong presence with good finishing and mobility. The team also secured a commitment from five-star recruit Austin Goosby. Additionally, Marcus Spears Jr., considered a top player in the 2027 class, reclassified to 2026 and committed to the Longhorns, further strengthening their roster. Spears Jr. is a versatile forward who averaged 20.9 points, 8.7 rebounds, 1.5 blocks, and 1.2 steals on the EYBL circuit.
Arkansas is set to feature a highly-ranked freshman class, including four five-star prospects: Jordan Smith Jr., JJ Andrews, Abdou Toure, and Miikka Muurinen. Smith Jr., the 2026 Gatorade National Player of the Year, is expected to be a strong two-way guard. The Razorbacks also return Billy Richmond III and added transfer guard Jeremiah Wilkinson.
Kentucky, after an injury-affected season, has brought in several key players, including Milan Momcilovic from Iowa State, who is recognized as a top shooter. Other transfers include Zoom Diallo from Washington and Alex Wilkins from Furman. These additions, along with returning center Malachi Moreno and international forward Ousmane N’Diaye, aim to help Kentucky compete for an SEC title.
Other teams mentioned as potential contenders include Michigan State and UConn.
