Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark received her seventh technical foul of the season during Wednesday’s 123-88 victory against the Connecticut Sun. This places her one technical foul away from an automatic one-game suspension in the WNBA. Clark finished the game with 27 points and 11 assists, contributing to the Fever setting a franchise record for points in the win.

The incident occurred late in the third quarter. After Clark was fouled by Sun center Olivia Nelson-Ododa, Sun guard Saniya Rivers waved her arm at Clark, expressing displeasure with the foul call. Clark responded by yelling in Rivers’ direction, leading to double technical fouls being assessed to both players.

When asked about the technical foul after the game, Clark explained the exchange. She stated, “She said she was locking me up, so I said ‘scoreboard,’ and the ref didn’t like that.” This marks her second technical foul in the past week, with a previous one occurring on Saturday against the New York Liberty after she reportedly yelled at referees about an uncalled play.

Implications for the Fever

Clark’s proximity to a suspension could significantly impact the Fever, especially as the playoffs approach. The team cannot afford to lose a key player, even for a single game, given the tight standings. The WNBA mandates a one-game suspension after a player accumulates eight technical fouls in a season, with subsequent suspensions occurring every two additional technical fouls.

Despite being close to a suspension, Clark has expressed that she will not change her intense playing style. She stated, “I’m never gonna back down. … That intensity and that fire is what makes me, me. But also knowing that my team needs me and finding a good balance of that.” However, she also acknowledged that playing with the threat of suspension in mind might hinder her performance.

Fever coach Stephanie White emphasized the need for Clark to be strategic moving forward to remain available for the team. White noted that while Clark has awareness of the situation, the team will try to help her manage it. The Fever have typically appealed Clark’s technical fouls, but if this latest one is not rescinded, she will remain tied with Atlanta Dream star Angel Reese for the most technical fouls in the league.

Team Performance and Upcoming Break

The Fever have shown strong performance recently, winning five of their last six games heading into the All-Star break. This run has propelled them to fifth place in the WNBA standings, one game behind the fourth-place Dallas Wings. The top four teams secure home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

Clark’, who has been managing a back injury throughout the season, had her minutes restriction lifted for the game against the Sun. She responded by making her first five three-point attempts and recording 21 points and seven assists in 17 first-half minutes. She added six points and four assists in the third quarter, marking her 16th game with at least 20 points and 10 assists, extending her WNBA record.

Fellow Fever All-Stars Kelsey Mitchell and Aliyah Boston also contributed significantly to the victory, scoring 23 and 22 points, respectively. Mitchell extended her franchise record by scoring 20 points in 11 consecutive games. The team will now enter an almost week-long All-Star break, with Clark, Boston, and Mitchell participating in the All-Star Game on Saturday. Their next game is scheduled for Tuesday against the Seattle Storm.
