Zion Rose, an outfielder from the University of Louisville, has been selected by the Kansas City Royals as the sixth overall pick in the 2026 MLB Draft. Rose, a prominent player for Louisville’s baseball team, is set to begin his professional career with the Royals.
Rose played a significant role in Louisville’s baseball program over three seasons. As a freshman, he started 43 of 44 games and led the team with a .380 batting average. In his sophomore year, Rose was one of only two Cardinals to participate in all 66 games, contributing to the team’s advancement to the College World Series. During this period, he maintained a six-game hit streak, which included a walk-off single in the College World Series against Arizona and a home run against Oregon State.
Rose’s Collegiate Performance and Draft Profile
Despite missing the initial month of the 2026 season due to an ankle injury, Rose demonstrated strong performance from April onward. He achieved First Team All-ACC and Second Team All-American honors, recording a .417 batting average, six home runs, 47 RBIs, and 24 stolen bases over 36 games. He also scored 44 runs.
Before his college career, Rose was considered a top-100 prospect, ranked as the No. 75 overall prospect by Perfect Game USA. He committed to Louisville over Vanderbilt and was not selected in the 2023 MLB Draft due to his commitment to the university. His collegiate career saw him as one of only six Division-I players in 2025 to achieve at least 30 extra-base hits and an equivalent number of stolen bases.

Rose’s strengths include his athleticism and power, alongside his speed and base-stealing abilities. His work ethic has been noted for his consistent improvement throughout his high school and college years. While his defense in the outfield improved over his three college seasons, it is an area identified for further development at the professional level. His arm strength is considered adequate but not elite.
Louisville’s Draft History and Other Notable Picks
Rose is the 112th Cardinal selected under head coach Dan McDonnell, who has seen at least two players drafted in 19 consecutive drafts. Following Louisville’s College World Series appearance last year, six Cardinals were drafted, with right-handed pitcher Patrick Forbes being the first, selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks with the 29th overall pick. Forbes has since made five professional appearances, including four starts, and has a 2.45 ERA over 14⅔ innings in his minor league career.
The 2026 MLB Draft also saw other Kentucky-area players selected. Tyler Bell, a shortstop from Kentucky, was chosen by the Colorado Rockies as the 10th overall pick. Bell’s two years with Kentucky enhanced his draft prospects after he was previously selected 66th in the 2024 MLB Draft. This season, Bell was the Wildcats’ third-leading hitter, batting .343 with 49 hits, nine home runs, 49 runs scored, and 29 RBIs, contributing to the team’s 33-23 record.

Additionally, Jaxon Jelkin, a right-handed pitcher who transferred to Kentucky from Houston in 2024, was drafted. Jelkin posted an 8-3 record with a 4.08 ERA for the Wildcats this past season, accumulating 106 strikeouts and a season-high of 12 batters fanned in Kentucky’s 4-2 victory over Florida on May 9. The MLB Draft commenced with the first four rounds today, and will continue with Rounds 5-20 on Saturday.
