Emotional Start to the Game
Boston Red Sox catcher Willson Contreras experienced a range of emotions during Monday’s 6-3 victory over the Washington Nationals at Fenway Park. Contreras, whose home country of Venezuela was recently affected by earthquakes, hit a three-run homer in the first inning. The 421-foot blast off Nationals right-hander Miles Mikolas landed in the left-center field seats.
As he rounded the bases, Contreras flipped his bat, tapped his helmet, and called out “Venezuela” towards his dugout. Once in the dugout, he was visibly emotional and embraced by teammates and coaches.

Before the game, Contreras spoke about the difficulty of performing while his home country was experiencing such hardship, stating, “It is really tough when you know what is going on in Venezuela … trying to perform, and at the same time trying to seek ways to help.”
Controversial Ejection and Team Reaction
The game took a controversial turn in the second inning when Contreras was ejected. After striking out on a check swing, first-base umpire Nic Lentz ruled that Contreras had gone around. As Contreras walked back to the dugout, he silently tapped his helmet, seemingly gesturing for an ABS challenge. Lentz immediately ejected him following this gesture.
Interim manager Chad Tracy came out to argue the decision, but the ejection stood. The call drew strong criticism from the NESN broadcast, with Red Sox analyst Will Middlebrooks calling it an “absolute joke” and “embarrassing to the game.” Middlebrooks emphasized the importance of keeping top players on the field for the fans, asking, “What are you doing? You are gonna throw a guy out of the game for that?”

Despite the early drama, the Red Sox secured the 6-3 win. Contreras’s three-run homer and another home run from Caleb Durbin contributed to Boston’s offense. The Red Sox had five runs and eight hits before the Nationals recorded five outs. Mikolas remained in the game for seven innings, giving up six runs.
Pitching Performance and Game Conclusion
Ranger Suarez looked to continue Boston’s streak of pitching that has been absolutely nails in this hot streak, facing a Nationals offense that had scored the most runs in 2026. James Wood hit a home run early in the game for the Nationals. Suarez then proceeded to throw first-pitch strikes to nine consecutive batters and maintained a clean performance. Even when this streak ended in the fourth inning, he managed to strike out two batters and exit the inning without further damage.
Suarez encountered some difficulty later in the game when the Nationals became more patient at the plate and drove in a few runs. However, he managed to get out of the jam, continuing a trend of strong rotation performances for the team.

The Nationals’ offense remained dynamic, keeping the score at 6-3 and the game competitive. Danny Coulombe and the Red Sox defense benefited from a ground ball that turned into a double play, helping them get out of the seventh inning. Garrett Whitlock came in to close out the game, successfully shutting down the Nationals’ efforts, despite manager Blake Butera’s use of pinch hitters. The Red Sox have been in strong form recently.
