Heat Pursue James After Antetokounmpo Signing
Miami Heat president Pat Riley has indicated the team is actively pursuing LeBron James, who is currently a free agent. This pursuit follows the recent acquisition of Giannis Antetokounmpo, whose introductory news conference took place on Thursday. Riley stated that having Antetokounmpo on the roster could significantly aid in recruiting James.
During the news conference, Riley made a notable comment, stating, “There’s another one we have to land,” in reference to James. He later clarified that while discussions had occurred, the team, like many others, is now awaiting James’s decision regarding his next team. Riley expressed confidence in the current roster following Antetokounmpo’s arrival, noting that talent and coaching are crucial for winning a title.
Riley recounted the process of securing Antetokounmpo, mentioning a phone call from Andy Elisburg after a month of discussions. He described the moment Elisburg confirmed the deal, saying, “We have a deal.” This phrase, “landing the plane,” is a common expression used by Riley and Elisburg to signify the completion of a major transaction.
James’s Free-Agent Decision Looms
LeBron James has not yet announced his free-agent decision, but he has identified six teams he is considering for the upcoming season. These teams include the Miami Heat, Golden State Warriors, Philadelphia 76ers, Cleveland Cavaliers, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Denver Nuggets. James previously announced he would play in the 2026-27 season but would not return to the Los Angeles Lakers.
James addressed his decision during a panel at the CNBC/Boardroom Game Plan event, indicating that an announcement would be made soon. He had previously refrained from making a decision during a live taping of his “Mind the Game” podcast at Fanatics Fest in New York.
The anticipation surrounding James’s choice extends beyond the teams involved. NBA commissioner Adam Silver also confirmed that the league’s offseason activities, including the broadcast schedules for its media partners, are largely dependent on where James decides to play. Silver noted that James’s decision will influence the setting of the schedule, particularly for opening week and Christmas games.

Impact on the NBA Schedule
The league’s schedule, typically announced in mid-August, is directly affected by James’s free-agent decision. Media partners such as ESPN/ABC, NBC, and Amazon are among those waiting for James to select his next team. The preseason is scheduled to begin on October 9, with games between the Dallas Mavericks and Houston Rockets in Macau, China.
James has a history with the Miami Heat, having signed with them as a free agent in 2010. During his four seasons with the team, he secured consecutive NBA championships in 2012 and 2013, earning MVP honors in both seasons. He later departed the Heat after the 2013-14 season to return to Cleveland.
Riley acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding James’s decision, stating, “I really can’t answer that right now.” He admitted that the Heat had discussions with James over a week ago, possibly two weeks prior, but are now in a waiting period, similar to other interested teams. This period of anticipation highlights the significant impact James’s choice has on the league and its various stakeholders.
The Heat president emphasized that adding James would provide a substantial boost to the team. However, he also reiterated his satisfaction with the current roster after securing Antetokounmpo, viewing it as a challenge for head coach Erik Spoelstra. The NBA preseason is slated to begin on October 9.
