Further demonstrating this commitment, the university announced an anonymous gift of $20 million in December, shortly after James Franklin’s appointment as head coach. In early June, the creation of the “Hokie Ventures” nonprofit corporation was revealed, designed to support athletics through investment and revenue generation. This was followed by the announcement of a $75 million gift, with the majority allocated to athletics. Additionally, Brian White was hired from Florida Atlantic as the new athletic director late last month, signaling a comprehensive overhaul of the athletic department.

Franklin’s Arrival and Coaching Decisions

The arrival of James Franklin, who previously coached at Penn State for a dozen years, is a central part of Virginia Tech’s renewed focus on football. Franklin’s hiring is seen as an opportunity to revive the program’s past successes, reminiscent of the Frank Beamer era, which included annual bowl appearances and a national championship game. Franklin acknowledged the importance of the program’s history, stating that he spoke with Beamer before taking the position, aiming to embrace tradition while also fostering evolution within the team.

Franklin’s tenure at Penn State concluded unexpectedly, with his firing in mid-October after a 3-3 start to the season, despite leading the Nittany Lions to the College Football Playoff semifinals the previous year. His move to Virginia Tech brings a high-profile coach to the ACC, joining other notable figures like Dabo Swinney at Clemson. Rhett Lashlee, coach of SMU, commented on Franklin’s experience and winning capabilities, noting his positive contribution to the league.

A Unique Coaching Reunion

One of Franklin’s significant decisions at Virginia Tech involves hiring Brent Pry as defensive coordinator. This move is particularly notable because Pry was previously fired as Virginia Tech’s head coach last fall, concluding his tenure with a career record of 16-24. The decision to bring Pry back to the same institution where he served as head coach is unusual in college football, and Franklin himself acknowledged the potential awkwardness of the situation.

The relationship between Franklin and Pry spans 30 years, rooted in professional collaboration and personal trust. Pry’s father, Jim Pry, was Franklin’s offensive coordinator during Franklin’s time as a DII quarterback. Pry also served as Franklin’s trusted assistant at Vanderbilt and led defenses ranked among the top 10 at Penn State. Franklin stated that Pry’s willingness to return to Virginia Tech in a coordinator role demonstrates his humility and dedication to the program. Upon his introduction to the team as defensive coordinator, Pry received a standing ovation, which Franklin noted helped him integrate quickly into his new role.

The financial incentives for improving athletic performance extend beyond ticket sales and concessions. The ACC’s revenue distribution model, which changed in 2025, rewards programs that generate higher TV viewership, a direct result of successful teams earning marquee broadcast slots. Additionally, the 2024 launch of the ACC’s “success initiative” allows teams to retain money from their own postseason achievements, such as a deep run in the College Football Playoff. For example, Clemson and SMU each earned $4 million for their bids to the 12-team CFP in 2024, while Miami’s championship game appearance secured $20 million.

The school received over $46.5 million for the 2024-25 season from the league’s media rights, highlighting the financial impact of athletic success. This financial context underscores the importance of Franklin’s role and the broader athletic investments at Virginia Tech.
