England Advances in World Cup
England secured the top position in Group L of the World Cup after defeating Panama. This victory allows England to avoid a potentially difficult knockout stage bracket that could have included facing Portugal or Colombia, and then possibly Spain. The team will now play their round of 32 match in Atlanta on July 1.
The match against Panama saw England break through in the second half. Jude Bellingham scored from a corner in the 62nd minute, followed by a header from Harry Kane. Panama’s Jose Fajardo had a goal disallowed for offside in stoppage time.

England’s journey in the tournament began with a 4-2 win against Croatia. However, they were held to a 0-0 draw by Ghana and did not score in the first half of the match against Panama at New York New Jersey Stadium.
Kane Sets New World Cup Record
Harry Kane’s goal against Panama marked his 11th World Cup goal, making him England’s all-time leading scorer in the tournament. This achievement places him one goal behind Brazil’s Pelé on the all-time list. Kane surpassed Gary Lineker’s record, who scored six goals in the 1986 World Cup and four in Italia ’90.
Kane, who debuted for England in 2015, scored his first international goal during a Euro 2016 qualifier against Lithuania. He became England’s all-time men’s leading goal scorer in March 2023, surpassing Wayne Rooney with his 54th international goal. Currently, Kane has 82 international goals in 116 appearances for his country.
His World Cup scoring began with six goals in Russia 2018, where he also earned the Golden Boot as the tournament’s top scorer. This included a hat trick against Panama and a brace against Tunisia in the group stage. In the Qatar World Cup four years later, he contributed two goals and three assists.
Looking Ahead for England
By finishing first in Group L with seven points, England is projected to face either Senegal or DR Congo in their round of 32 match on July 1. Should they win, their round of 16 game on July 5 would likely be against co-hosts Mexico or Ecuador in Mexico City.
The team’s performance against Panama, while securing the win, highlighted some areas for improvement. Assistant manager Anthony Barry noted that the team’s initial energy led to too many central ball losses and counter-attacks. He emphasized the need for more synchronicity and rhythm in their play.
Marcus Rashford, making his first start in this World Cup, showed impactful play despite some lapses. His direct dribbling and pace created chances, positioning him for further opportunities in the knockout stages. However, the team’s defense appeared less solid, with Jarell Quansah sustaining an apparent injury, potentially weakening their full-back options.
Croatia, finishing as runners-up in Group L, will likely play Colombia or Portugal in Toronto on July 2. Ghana, who finished third, will face the winner of Group K in Kansas City on July 3. Panama finished last in the group and has been eliminated from the tournament.
