Aiyuk’s criticism of 49ers leadership
Brandon Aiyuk, wide receiver for the San Francisco 49ers, has recently directed criticism towards both general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan. In a video, Aiyuk expressed his expectation that Lynch might visit his home uninvited, while also issuing a warning against such a visit. He further commented on Shanahan, describing the coach’s temperament.
Aiyuk’s remarks included a direct address to Lynch, suggesting he should reconsider approaching his home. He characterized the situation as unusual, recounting an instance where the general manager reportedly attempted to apologize on behalf of the head coach, who Aiyuk claimed had spoken inappropriately to him. This marks the first time Aiyuk has publicly targeted Lynch and Shanahan directly, following a series of social media posts concerning his relationship with the franchise.

Ongoing dispute and contract status
The current dispute stems from events that began after Aiyuk sustained a season-ending knee injury during the 2024 season. Following this injury, the 49ers placed Aiyuk on the reserve/left squad list when he did not appear during the 2025 season. Subsequently, the team voided a significant portion of his guaranteed contract money for 2026, reportedly due to his failure to participate in team meetings and activities.
Aiyuk eventually left the team facility late in the season and has not engaged in direct conversations with John Lynch or Kyle Shanahan since. His communication with the 49ers has primarily been through social media, where he has previously referred to the team as “stupid” and “dumb” for his compensation. These actions suggest Aiyuk’s desire to no longer play for the 49ers.
Despite the ongoing issues, the 49ers have not shown urgency to release Aiyuk. The team’s preference has been to pursue a trade that would provide some form of compensation. Head coach Kyle Shanahan indicated in April that the situation would eventually resolve itself, expressing hope for a trade but stating no rush to make a decision.
Desire to join the Commanders and agent claims
Aiyuk has publicly stated his intention to play for the Washington Commanders ahead of the 2026 season. He has promoted the Commanders on social media, including chanting “Go Commanders!” in a post. More recently, he affirmed that if the 49ers were to release him, he would sign with the Commanders immediately.
The connection with Washington is partly attributed to Aiyuk’s friendship with quarterback Jayden Daniels, his former teammate at Arizona State. Additionally, Commanders general manager Adam Peters was part of the 49ers’ front office when Aiyuk was initially drafted. However, the Commanders have not publicly commented on their interest in acquiring Aiyuk, and his social media conduct has led to discussions about his appeal to other teams.
In a related development, Aiyuk claimed in a video posted to Instagram that he terminated his agent’s representation in November of the previous year, stating he had filed the necessary paperwork with the NFLPA. He asserted, “I do not have an agent.” However, NFLPA records indicate that Ryan Williams of Athletes First remains Aiyuk’s agent of record. An NFLPA source confirmed that the required paperwork to terminate the Standard Representative Agreement (SRA) has not been submitted, contradicting Aiyuk’s statement.
Reports from April suggested that Aiyuk and Williams had not communicated for an unspecified period, which subsequent information indicated exceeded six months. The standard process for agent termination involves the player contacting the NFLPA, followed by an exchange of paperwork and emails among the NFLPA, the player, and the agent to finalize the termination.
The relationship between Aiyuk and the 49ers has deteriorated over the past year, despite the agreement on a four-year contract extension in 2024. The voiding of guaranteed bonus money from this extension was reportedly linked to Aiyuk’s medical rehabilitation. Neither Aiyuk nor the NFLPA challenged this decision. While Aiyuk showed progress in his recovery, he ceased showing up and communicating with the franchise around November. The 49ers have maintained that communication has not resumed and that there is no expectation of him playing for the organization again, despite his contract running through 2027.
Because Aiyuk was placed on the reserve/left squad list, he must petition the league for reinstatement. If reinstated, showing up to the facility would likely trigger his release, otherwise the 49ers would remain responsible if he were to suffer an injury on their property. Whether Washington intends to sign the receiver, who has not played since 2024, remains uncertain.

Uncertainty for the upcoming season
As training camp approaches, Aiyuk’s playing future for the 2026 season remains unclear, including whether he will take the field at all this year. The 49ers are under no obligation to release him, and the Commanders have not publicly expressed interest in acquiring him.
