Vivek Ramaswamy’s Campaign for Ohio Governor

Posted on 06.05.2026

In the upcoming Ohio governor race, Vivek Ramaswamy has secured the Republican nomination, marking a significant step in his political journey. His campaign, heavily fueled by personal investment and a focus on COVID-19 controversies, is shaping up to be one of the most expensive in Ohio’s history.

Ramaswamy, who has raised $25 million from donors and matched that with another $25 million of his own money, defeated Casey Putsch in the Republican primary. He’s not just a candidate; he’s a figure with national name recognition thanks to his previous run for president. His running mate for lieutenant governor is Rob McColley.

Meanwhile, on the Democratic side, Amy Acton—Ohio’s former public health director during the COVID-19 pandemic—won her nomination without opposition. Acton’s campaign has also garnered attention, as she faces Ramaswamy in a state that hasn’t elected a Democrat as governor in 20 years. Her running mate is David Pepper.

The backdrop of this race is steeped in the lingering anger over COVID-19 restrictions. Ramaswamy’s campaign capitalizes on this sentiment, framing his narrative around freedom versus what he calls “Fauci-ism.” In his words: “Are we choosing freedom or are we choosing Fauci?” This rhetoric resonates with many who felt constrained during the pandemic.

But it’s not just about rhetoric. Observers note that Ramaswamy has been accused of playing politics with COVID-19 issues, which could sway undecided voters. Still, his financial backing positions him well against Acton, who reported having only $5 million on hand for her campaign compared to Ramaswamy’s $30 million.

As both candidates prepare for what promises to be a historic election, the stakes are high. With Ramaswamy’s wealth and Acton’s public health experience at play, their contrasting approaches could redefine Ohio’s political landscape.

In this charged atmosphere, voters are keenly aware of their choices. The outcome may hinge on how effectively each candidate can communicate their vision for Ohio post-pandemic—and whether they can connect with an electorate still grappling with the consequences of those challenging years.
