Giants Quarterback Jaxson Dart Under Evaluation
New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart underwent a concussion evaluation during Saturday’s preseason opener against the Minnesota Vikings. Dart was taken to the medical tent after sustaining a significant hit on a sack during the final play of the first quarter. This incident marked another instance of Dart entering the medical tent, following five similar evaluations during his rookie season.
Despite the initial concern, Dart quickly exited the tent and returned to the game. He later threw a touchdown pass to rookie wideout Malachi Fields on his final play of the contest. The quick return eased immediate worries, though the frequency of his evaluations remains a point of discussion.
Harbaugh’s Reaction and Player Safety Protocols
Following the game, Giants head coach John Harbaugh shared his immediate thoughts upon seeing Dart leave the field. Harbaugh stated, “My feeling in that moment was we need to block better.” He also noted that Dart informed him he had the wind knocked out of him.
Harbaugh was questioned about whether he was surprised by Dart’s trip to the medical tent. He responded, “Honestly, I was. I would say that their job is to err on the side of player safety, so I can’t argue with that either.” This perspective highlights the league’s emphasis on player well-being, even if it leads to frequent evaluations for certain players.
The league previously fined former Giants head coach Brian Daboll for interfering with one of Dart’s concussion checks last year. This history underscores the strict adherence to concussion protocols within the NFL.
Dart Expresses Puzzlement Over Protocols
Dart himself expressed some bewilderment regarding the NFL’s concussion evaluation protocols. He told reporters after the game that while he respects the rules and the league’s commitment to player health, he is still “puzzled” by the fact that he frequently finds himself in the medical tent after taking hits. “I’m still puzzled by it just feeling like every time I get hit, I find my way in there, which at times I still try to wrap my head around,” Dart commented.
During his rookie season in 2025, Dart made 14 appearances and was diagnosed with one concussion, yet he underwent five separate checks throughout the year. In December of last year, he mentioned what he perceived as a “sensitivity” towards him whenever he experienced contact on the field.
Mobility and Future Adjustments
Dart’s playing style, characterized by his mobility and ability to scramble out of the pocket, presents a double-edged sword. While this mobility makes him an effective player, it also increases his susceptibility to taking more hits. The hit he sustained on Saturday from Vikings safety Jay Ward was described as vicious, leading trainers to err on the side of caution by sending him to the medical tent.
In an effort to adapt from his first season and reduce the number of hits he takes, Dart has been making a concerted effort during training camp to slide rather than extending plays. Avoiding such hits is seen as the most direct way for Dart to minimize his visits to the medical tent. The Giants organization hopes that Dart will make significantly fewer trips to the medical tent this year compared to his rookie season.
