Din Thomas, a long-time mixed martial arts coach and current UFC analyst, announced his retirement from cornering fighters following Gillian Robertson‘s defeat at UFC 330. The announcement came after Robertson’s unanimous decision loss to strawweight champion Mackenzie Dern in the co-main event held at Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia.
Thomas, who was part of the UFC broadcast on Paramount+, stepped away from his analyst duties to corner Robertson during her fight. After the event, while at the analyst desk, Thomas revealed that this was his final time cornering a fighter.
Thomas’s Retirement Announcement
Thomas explained his decision, stating, “I told myself I would continue to do this until I took Gillian as far as she could go. I think that might be as far as she can go, and I am officially retiring from cornering fighters tonight.” He further clarified his commitment to Robertson’s journey, saying, “It’s just I told myself that I would do this with her. I would see her journey out and take her as far as I think she can go, and this might be as far as she can go.”
Despite his retirement from cornering, Thomas intends to continue coaching fighters and assisting them with their training. However, the demanding aspects of accompanying a fighter through fight week and being in their corner are now behind him. Thomas cited the significant stress and work overload associated with these responsibilities as the primary reasons for his decision.
He elaborated on the intensity of the role, noting, “It’s a lot of work – it’s a lot of stress. It’s a lot of work. You’ve got to be there all week, and, again, I’ve been slowly telling you, like, I don’t cut weight with them, and it’s not fair to them. They need somebody who’s going to really put that type of work in with them.”
Reaction to the Announcement
The announcement by Thomas during the post-fight show at UFC 330 generated significant discussion. UFC commentator Jon Anik was among those who voiced disapproval regarding the timing and nature of Thomas’s retirement speech. Anik commented, “Wow. Awful. Not about you, bro! Wow.”
A clip of Thomas’s speech quickly gained traction on social media, leading to widespread criticism from MMA fans. Many questioned the appropriateness of the public announcement, with one fan asking, “Man, why would he get on national TV and do that? That’s so uncalled for.” Other comments included, “Weak move by Din, not professional at all,” and “Agree. This is a terrible ’emotional’ reaction by Din. I hope Gillian did not find out about her lead corner ‘retiring’ while watching this.”
Another user on X suggested, “Could have picked a better setting to say this, Din, probably privately. Hope they fry this dude on deep waters.” There was also hope expressed by a fan that Thomas had informed Robertson privately before making the public statement: “I’m gonna hope he told her before he told us.”
UFC CEO Dana White also reacted to Thomas’s unexpected retirement from cornering. White expressed surprise, noting that as a personal friend, he had not been informed of the decision beforehand. He also questioned the choice to announce the retirement on live television.
White stated, “That’s weird. He didn’t say anything to me. I didn’t know about that. I’ve never heard about retiring from cornering. That might be a first. That’s the first I’ve ever heard of it.” White speculated on the reasons behind Thomas’s decision, suggesting, “Maybe he’s just tired of the grind. You know, he’s worked with so many fighters over the years. Maybe he’s just burnt out.”
UFC 330, held in Philadelphia, featured several notable moments, including five knockouts and a submission. The main event saw Islam Makhachev achieve a record-breaking 17th consecutive win. The event also marked the retirement announcements of two individuals following defeats in separate fights.

Robertson’s record stands at 17-9 MMA, 14-7 UFC, while Dern’s record is 17-5 MMA, 12-5 UFC. Thomas’s announcement followed Robertson’s first UFC title fight.
