Florida State head coach Mike Norvell is preparing his team for the upcoming season, with the opener against New Mexico State scheduled for August 29. The team’s performance in the 2025 season, which saw them finish with a 5-7 record, has placed Norvell in a position where an improved showing is expected. Since being excluded from the 2023 College Football Playoff, FSU has a record of 7-18. Norvell has overseen four losing seasons, a number that matches the combined total of his three predecessors over the previous 44 years.
Norvell has taken back play-calling responsibilities after Gus Malzahn retired. The offense will be directed by Auburn transfer quarterback Ashton Daniels and wide receiver Duce Robinson. Robinson was named to the preseason All-ACC team after recording 56 receptions for 1,081 yards and six touchdowns last season. The Arizona native returned for his senior year with aspirations of enhancing his prospects for the NFL draft.
Offensive Strengths and Defensive Adjustments
The Seminoles opted not to acquire an additional receiver through the transfer portal, anticipating that sophomore Micahi Danzy could develop into a key player. Danzy accumulated 787 all-purpose yards and six touchdowns as a freshman, with 571 receiving yards and 216 rushing yards. He also led the league with an average of 21.2 yards per reception. His current weight is 194 pounds, which he believes will aid his performance on short and intermediate routes, potentially forming one of the league’s top receiver duos with Robinson.
The team’s secondary has undergone changes, despite the return of safety Ashlynd Barker and cornerback Ja’Bril Rawls Jr., who were part of a passing defense that ranked second in the ACC last year. FSU is integrating three new transfer starters into the secondary: cornerback Nehemiah Chandler from South Alabama, free safety CJ Richard Jr. from Illinois State, and nickelback Ma’Khi Jones from Duke. The depth in this area was affected by an injury to Notre Dame transfer safety Karson Hobbs, who sustained a torn knee ligament during camp and underwent season-ending surgery.

Other new additions to the team include left tackle Xavier Chaplin, who transferred from Auburn, defensive end Rylan Kennedy from Texas A&M, and running back Quintrevion Wisner from Texas. Key departures from the team include defensive lineman Darrell Jackson Jr., who was a fourth-round NFL draft pick, safety Earl Little Jr., who transferred to Ohio State, and defensive end Amaree Williams, who transferred to Mississippi State.
Practice Focus and Upcoming Schedule
Norvell expressed satisfaction with the team’s ongoing development, particularly highlighting the offense’s performance in situational drills. He noted that the offense has embraced the two-minute drill, viewing it as an opportunity for the coaching staff to collaborate effectively. The improved health of wide receiver Jayvan Boggs has also contributed to the offense’s versatility. Boggs, who had a record-setting senior year in high school, faced injuries during his freshman year but has been working to regain full fitness.
On the defensive side, Norvell commended linebacker coach Ernie Sims for his work with the position group. Sims, a former FSU player, is in his first year as linebacker coach and has been instrumental in shaping the group’s approach and mentality. Norvell noted the daily intensity and competitive spirit Sims brings to the team, fostering a strong competitive environment within the linebacker room.
The Seminoles have begun their practice preparations for New Mexico State, dedicating approximately 15 minutes to studying their opponent. The team will continue with four consecutive days of practice starting on Monday. Important games for Florida State this season include matchups against SMU on September 7, Virginia on October 3, and Clemson on October 31.
