The Tragic Case of Traveler’s Table: A Shocking Murder-Suicide

Posted on 06.05.2026

On May 5, 2026, a shocking murder-suicide unfolded in River Oaks, Houston, involving Matthew Mitchell, 52, his wife Thy, 39, and their two young children. The couple owned popular restaurants—Traveler’s Table and Traveler’s Cart—well-regarded in the local culinary scene.

Their lives took a tragic turn around 5:30 p.m. when police responded to reports of gunfire at their home on Kingston Street. Officers entered the residence and located four unresponsive individuals with gunshot wounds. Evidence indicated that Matthew shot Thy and their two children before taking his own life.

This incident has sent ripples through the Houston restaurant community. Just last year, the Mitchells were celebrated as the 2025 Restaurateurs of the Year by the Texas Restaurant Association. Their restaurants thrived on creativity and passion—Thy was known for her vibrant energy. Chef Jassi Bindra recalled, “She was so energetic. She loved the restaurant world.” Craig Howard from the Texas Restaurant Association remarked, “We saw such a bright star with Thy that we asked her to serve on our board.”

Before this tragedy struck, the Mitchells had carved out a niche in Houston’s culinary landscape. They opened Traveler’s Table in 2019 and followed up with Traveler’s Cart in 2023. Their success seemed to symbolize a promising future—a power couple thriving together.

But now, the shockwaves of domestic violence have marred that image. The investigation continues as authorities seek clarity on what led to this heartbreaking decision. The identities of the victims were pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

The culinary world mourns not just for the loss of life but for what it signifies about hidden struggles within seemingly successful families. The Mitchells also ventured into fashion with their travel-inspired line called Foreign Fare—now forever overshadowed by this tragedy.

In light of this event, discussions around mental health and domestic violence are more critical than ever within communities like Houston’s restaurant industry. As experts weigh in on these issues, many are left wondering how to address such profound challenges effectively.

The family has not released a statement regarding the incident as they navigate this unimaginable loss.
