Tigers trade Skubal to Dodgers
The Detroit Tigers have traded left-handed pitcher Tarik Skubal to the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for three minor league prospects. The deal involved right-handers River Ryan and Brady Smith, and outfielder Zyhir Hope. Skubal, still one of the best pitchers in baseball, was sent to the Dodgers as a late-season acquisition.
Scott Harris, the Tigers’ president of baseball operations, made the move. Hope was ranked as the No. 5 prospect in the Dodgers’ system by MLB Pipeline and No. 25 overall in the minors. Ryan was listed at No. 68 on MLB Pipeline’s top 100 list, while Smith was ranked 17th among Dodgers prospects but not in the top 100.

The Dodgers’ president of baseball operations, Andrew Friedman, commented on the team’s approach, stating that they become more aggressive when a star-level player who can significantly impact championship odds becomes available. One report indicated that Harris had preliminary discussions with teams regarding potential prospects to meet a “high threshold” for Skubal. However, the Tigers entered a recent Saturday at 52-58, 6½ games back in the American League Central, and 3½ games back in the AL wild-card chase. They also had a 31-38 record against teams with a winning record.

The Dodgers’ move for Skubal comes as baseball has seen improved television ratings, with national games up 44 percent from last year. There has also been an increase in viewers aged 18-34 and a rise in women viewers. Ballpark attendance was up 1.1 percent at the All-Star break, marking the fourth consecutive year of gains.
The Pittsburgh Pirates, for example, averaged 30,644 fans for a three-game weekday series against the Dodgers in June, compared to an average of 20,610 fans in their other 54 home games this season. The Dodgers themselves are averaging 50,445 attendees.
The Milwaukee Brewers have five players in the top 100 prospects, while the Atlanta Braves, Philadelphia Phillies, and Boston Red Sox each have three. Skubal is expected to earn approximately $11 million for the remainder of the season, a figure reportedly affordable for any team.
Friedman expressed strong disagreement with the idea that the Dodgers are detrimental to baseball, highlighting the partnership with their fans who attend games in large numbers and their passion for the team. He praised the players, coaches, scouts, and analysts on his staff.
The Dodgers were one catch away from losing Game 7 of the World Series against the Blue Jays last season. The New York Mets have a luxury tax payroll of $370.5 million and are on pace to lose 95 games this season.
