San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak noted that the return of Christian McCaffrey and George Kittle to practice has brought a noticeable boost to the team’s energy. Both players participated in portions of Sunday’s practice, with Kubiak highlighting their presence as a positive influence as the team prepares for the regular season.
McCaffrey, who returned after a two-week absence, expressed feeling “fresh” and ready to be back on the field. He participated in some 11-on-11 snaps, carrying the ball three times, including one run for an approximate 25-yard gain. Kittle, making his first practice appearance since sustaining an Achilles injury on January 11, focused on individual drills and did not participate in team 11-on-11 periods as he eases back into action. His availability for Week 1 against the Los Angeles Rams in Australia is a goal for the tight end.
Key Player Returns and Offensive Impact
Kubiak emphasized that having players of McCaffrey and Kittle’s caliber back on the field provides significant energy. He described them as “Hall of Fame-caliber players” getting their work in. Kittle’s return is particularly impactful, as the offense has specific concepts and plays designed to utilize his unique abilities. While the team can adjust if Kittle is unavailable, his presence allows for a broader playbook. The development of fellow tight end Jake Tonges last season has given the coaching staff confidence in operating the offense even without Kittle, but the team will continue to evaluate Kittle’s availability for Week 1.
McCaffrey indicated that his recent absence from practice was part of a planned ramp-up schedule to ensure he remains fresh for the duration of the season. His return to practice included breaking a run for a significant gain, demonstrating his continued impact on the field.

Training Camp Notes and Position Battles
During Sunday’s practice, several other players also drew attention. Rookie running back Kaelon Black had an impressive session, showing a hard-charging style and making big runs, including one for a 20-yard gain after a helmet-to-helmet hit. Kubiak praised Black’s performance in his first NFL game, noting his physical ability to create yards and his strong pass protection. Another rookie running back, Jordan James, is also back on the practice field after dealing with injuries and is expected to receive opportunities in the upcoming preseason game against the Raiders. James has been working on his passing game reps, including choice routes and option routes.
The competition for the starting left guard position remains open, with Connor Colby, rookie Carver Willis, and Austen Pleasants all rotating through the role. Kubiak noted that Pleasants, who has also played other positions on the offensive line, suffered an injury with no immediate timetable for his return. Willis has shown progress and spent time with the first team. On the defensive side, James Thompson Jr., a defensive tackle, lined up with the starters and recorded a “sack” on Brock Purdy, showcasing his ability as a run defender and pass rusher.
Wide receiver Jacob Cowing, recently returned from a hip flexor injury, also made an impression during 1-on-1 drills and caught a deep pass from Purdy in 11-on-11 work. Veteran wide receiver Mike Evans, who left practice appearing frustrated, had a connection with Purdy during team drills, but there was no immediate indication of the severity of his situation. Kubiak highlighted Evans’ mindset and commitment to improving the team.
The 49ers are scheduled to have a walk-through practice on Monday morning before traveling to Southern California for a joint practice with the Los Angeles Chargers on Tuesday.
