Nvidia china ai market share: Nvidia’s AI Market Share in China Plummets to Zero

Posted on 04.05.2026

Nvidia’s market share for AI accelerators in China has dropped to zero, a staggering fall from its previous 66% hold just two years ago. This dramatic decline stems from strict US export controls that have effectively barred Nvidia from selling its products to Chinese firms.

Jensen Huang, Nvidia’s CEO, stated, “In China, we have now dropped to zero.” He acknowledged that conceding an entire market as vast as China’s “probably does not make a lot of strategic sense.” Once a dominant player in the AI sector, Nvidia now faces fierce competition from domestic companies like Huawei, Cambricon, Moore Threads, and MetaX.

The implications of this shift are significant. With Nvidia’s exit, Chinese technology firms are rapidly filling the void. According to industry analysts, domestic vendors are expected to cover up to 80% of the demand for AI accelerators previously met by Nvidia. This transition marks a pivotal moment in AI market dynamics.

Historically, Nvidia’s GPUs have been at the forefront of AI development in China. The company had established itself as a leader—its technology powering countless applications across various sectors. However, with direct sales to Chinese companies now ceased due to US restrictions, the landscape has changed dramatically.

Huang elaborated on this situation by saying, “The argument there is that across the five-layer cake, there’s one particular layer that is too important because in the others, China can get ahead.” This highlights a growing sentiment that while some sectors may be dominated by foreign technologies, others can thrive independently.

Looking ahead, Nvidia’s projected market share in China is estimated at just 8% in the coming years—a stark contrast to its previous dominance. As domestic players continue to innovate and expand their capabilities, observers will be keenly watching how this reshaping of the AI landscape unfolds.
