Flower Moon: A Micromoon to Watch

Posted on 01.05.2026

The upcoming Flower Moon will peak on May 1 at 10:23 am PST, showcasing a unique sight for skywatchers. This full moon, known for its connection to blooming flowers in spring across North America, will appear smaller than usual since it coincides with a micromoon—when the moon is at its farthest point from Earth.

According to The Old Farmer’s Almanac, “The flower moon’s name comes from the fact that the full moon coincides with flowers blooming in the spring across North America.” As it approaches peak illumination, the Flower Moon will reach 99% brightness on the nights of May 1 and May 2 before hitting full brightness at 1:23 p.m. EDT. Though it may not be as large as other moons, its beauty remains undeniable.

In fact, this year is special because May includes two full moons—the Flower Moon and a Blue Moon on May 31. The distinction of a Blue Moon arises when there are two full moons within one calendar month. Just last August, stargazers enjoyed a blue supermoon, which was particularly striking due to its proximity to Earth.

Key details about the Flower Moon:

  • The Flower Moon peaks at 10:23 am PST on May 1.
  • It will be at 99% illumination on May 1 and May 2.
  • This micromoon will appear at a size of 29.72 arcminutes, compared to the average moon size of 31 arcminutes.

Skywatching enthusiasts are gearing up for this lunar event. They’ll set their sights on the southeast horizon as twilight deepens into night. Venus and Jupiter may also grace the evening sky alongside Spica and Arcturus—adding more beauty to this celestial display.

Catherine Pilachowski emphasized that “the first full moon of the month, known as the flower moon, reaches peak fullness at 1:23 p.m. ET on May 1.” With such anticipation building among astronomers and casual observers alike, many are preparing their telescopes and cameras for this special moment in time.

This Flower Moon not only marks a significant lunar event but also serves as a reminder of nature’s cycles—spring blooms ushering in warmth and light after winter’s chill. It’s a chance to pause and appreciate both the beauty above us and the blossoms that flourish below.
