In a highly anticipated pitching matchup on July 2, Chase Burns of the Cincinnati Reds emerged victorious over Jacob Misiorowski of the Milwaukee Brewers. The Reds secured a win, preventing a four-game sweep against the first-place Brewers. Burns allowed two runs over six innings during the game.
This marked the 15th time this season that Burns allowed two runs or fewer in a start. His performance led to his 12th start in the last 13 where he permitted two or fewer runs, further solidifying his bid for the National League All-Star team.
Misiorowski’s Outing and Offensive Support
Misiorowski, known for his high-velocity pitches, struck out 10 batters over five innings. He did not issue any walks and allowed only one earned run during his outing, throwing 82 pitches. Despite his strong strikeout numbers, the Reds managed to score five runs against him, four of which were unearned due to a fourth-inning error by Milwaukee first baseman Jake Bauers.
The Reds’ offense capitalized on the error, with Jose Trevino hitting his first home run of the season, a three-run shot. Earlier in the game, Sal Stewart hit a home run off a 102-mph fastball from Misiorowski, giving Burns an early lead. Stewart’s home run came after Misiorowski started the game with a three-pitch strikeout of Elly De La Cruz.
Burns’ day began with a four-pitch walk to Christian Yelich, but he recovered to get Jackson Chourio to pop out and Brice Turang to strike out. William Contreras had an opportunity with a runner in scoring position but also struck out, ending the inning.
Key Moments and Player Performances
The Brewers had several hard-hit balls early in the game but struggled to convert them into runs. For instance, Jake Bauers hit a line drive that was caught by Nathaniel Lowe, and Garrett Mitchell drew a walk but was later doubled off first base after a catchable fly ball from Sal Frelick. In the third inning, David Hamilton reached on an infield single after Burns knocked down his ground ball with his glove.
In the bottom of the fourth, Turang reached on an error by De La Cruz. However, Contreras flew out, Turang was caught stealing, and Bauers hit a ball to deep center that resulted in an out. The Brewers managed to get on the scoreboard in the fifth inning when Mitchell hit a solo home run off Burns’ second pitch, making him 5-for-5 with four extra-base hits and a walk in his last six plate appearances.
Misiorowski was removed after five innings, a decision that appeared to be part of a plan to manage his workload for the remainder of the season and potential playoffs. He was replaced by Grant Anderson, who struck out Suárez and Lowe before getting Marte to ground out. In the sixth inning, Chourio hit a single, and Turang followed with a double, allowing Chourio to score from first after JJ Bleday misplayed the ball.
The Reds added another run in the eighth inning. After a leadoff single by Lowe and a couple of fielder’s choice groundouts, Trevino and TJ Friedl hit back-to-back two-out singles to score the Reds’ seventh run. Misiorowski’s 17-start resume includes a 2.40 ERA and 116 strikeouts in 97 2/3 innings.
