Canada fighter jet fleet review

Posted on 01.05.2026

“The review of the purchase of the F-35s is continuing… We are taking the necessary time to study very, very closely the question of the fighter fleet,” said David McGuinty, a key figure in Canada’s defense discussions. As tensions rise globally—especially with increasing threats from Russia and China—Canada’s delay in deciding on its next generation of military aircraft raises eyebrows.

Since launching the review process in March 2025, officials have yet to set a timeline for when they’ll finalize their decision on acquiring 88 F-35A Lightning II jets. This indecision comes at a time when other nations, like Germany and Finland, are rapidly accelerating their own F-35 procurements.

The backdrop is Canada’s aging CF-18 fleet, which has been in service for decades and faces significant operational challenges. As Maj. Gen. Chris McKenna pointed out, “NORAD needs an aircraft that has overmatch over the adversaries.” Without timely action, Canada risks falling behind in its defense capabilities.

Key facts about Canada’s fighter jet procurement:

  • Canada has secured funding for the first 16 F-35s and has made additional payments for future jets.
  • Over 110 Canadian companies are involved in the F-35 program, securing more than $3 billion CAD in contracts.
  • Saab has proposed the Gripen C as an alternative to the F-35, promising to support 12,500 Canadian jobs through local assembly and technology transfer.

The Gripen C proposal offers a unique angle—data will be housed securely within Canadian borders. As Sierra Fullerton noted, “Gripen data will also be housed here, securely within Canadian borders.” This presents an opportunity for Canada to enhance its sovereignty and control over military data.

Yet uncertainties loom large. No timeline has been shared regarding when the review will conclude or how receptive Canada might be to Saab’s Gripen pitch. With escalating global threats and a pressing need for modernization, stakeholders are eager to see decisive action from Canadian officials.

The stakes are high; as other nations bolster their air forces, Canada’s prolonged review could significantly impact its strategic position within North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD). The clock is ticking for Canada to solidify its defense strategy amidst growing international pressures.
