A two-alarm fire at the USF Marine Science Laboratory on May 2, 2026, has left the building likely a total loss, igniting worries about the future of research and classes in this vital facility.
The flames erupted around 5:39 p.m., quickly engulfing the structure. More than 60 units and 200 firefighters rushed to the scene after a civilian reported seeing smoke and flames. Michael Lewis, a spokesperson for Pinellas County Safety and Emergency Services, stated, “Basically, the entire attic was involved.” Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and all employees have been accounted for.
The laboratory—constructed around 1940—housed advanced chemistry, biology, and oceanography labs. It became part of the USF Marine Science research campus during expansions in the 1990s and 2000s. While adjacent buildings remained unscathed, officials are still assessing the full extent of the damage.
Firefighters are not only battling hot spots but also monitoring air quality due to potential hazardous materials on site. Lewis emphasized that “this is going to be a very extensive process to go through,” as they work to confirm that no active fire is affecting any hazardous substances.
As investigators work to determine the cause of this devastating fire, concerns loom over its impact on ongoing marine science research. Lydia Shaw, a student whose classes are scheduled in that building this fall, expressed her fears: “I’m personally terrified because I have classes in that building in the fall.” The exact cause of the fire has not been disclosed yet.
