Breslow acknowledged that trading these prospects was “very uncomfortable.”
Rutschman, the first pick of the 2019 draft, made his major league debut in 2022 and has earned three All-Star selections in his first five seasons. However, he has played a limited number of games over the last two seasons due to injuries. His offensive statistics this season include hitting .251 with eight home runs and 47 RBI in 67 games, with a .182 ISO.
Another notable trade saw the Red Sox send former first-round pick Marcelo Mayer to the Giants for left-handed reliever Erik Miller and a minor league outfielder. Mayer, who was the fourth pick of the 2021 draft, has faced injury challenges. Miller, a 28-year-old, has a 2.76 earned run average and 12.4 strikeouts per nine innings in 38 appearances, providing a late-inning bullpen option.
The Red Sox also acquired outfielder Eli White from the Braves in exchange for Triple-A right-hander Tyler Uberstine. White is expected to fill a role as a fourth outfielder.
Strategic Shift and Outlook
These moves represent a departure from the Red Sox’s previous approach at the trade deadline in 2024 and 2025, when Breslow made only minor adjustments. He stated that the goal was not to “win the trade” but to improve the major league team. This shift in philosophy comes as the Red Sox have won 28 of their last 33 games, positioning them as contenders.
One talent evaluator expressed surprise at the Rutschman trade, calling it “one of the most ridiculous trades I’ve seen in 30 years.” There is acknowledgment that these trades carry risks, with the potential for the traded prospects to develop into significant players for other teams. However, if the Red Sox maintain their momentum and make a deep postseason run, these decisions may be viewed favorably.
