The team confirmed the incident on Saturday, the day camp commenced. Shanahan sustained several injuries, including a concussion, a broken nose, and multiple broken ribs. Additionally, he injured his hands in the collision. One report indicated that he suffered three broken ribs, a broken hand, and a severe concussion, requiring over 40 stitches in his face.
The 49ers organization described Shanahan’s injuries as “non-life-threatening” and expressed gratitude to the first responders who assisted at the scene of the crash last week. Shanahan was transported to a hospital by paramedics, where he spent a significant portion of the day of the accident. The other driver involved in the collision was not injured, and authorities determined that neither drugs nor alcohol were factors in the crash, with no citations issued.
While no specific timeline has been provided for Shanahan’s full return to his coaching duties, he has not yet been cleared for all activities due to his concussion. He will participate in team activities on a limited basis as he recovers.
Leadership During Training Camp
During Shanahan’s recovery period, Assistant Head Coach Chris Foerster will assume primary head coaching responsibilities. Foerster, who is 64, has been a part of Shanahan’s staff since 2019. He will be supported by the team’s coordinators, including Klay Kubiak, Raheem Morris, and Brant Boyer.
The 49ers are scheduled to hold their first practice on Sunday. The team’s season is set to begin in Australia against the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday, September 10, which marks the second game of the 2026 NFL season. This arrangement ensures that the team maintains leadership and continuity as they prepare for the upcoming season.
Shanahan’s Tenure and Team Performance
