Players Eye Roster Spots in Preseason Opener
As the Washington Commanders approach their first preseason game, several players are looking to solidify their positions on the final 53-man roster. This opportunity follows their performances in training camp, including a recent joint practice with the Miami Dolphins. While it is not yet clear how many of Washington’s starters will participate, the Dolphins’ coach expects all of his players to be on the field.
Among those aiming to make a significant impact are running back Kaytron Allen, tight end Colson Yankoff, and cornerback Fabian Moreau. Each player has shown potential during training camp and hopes to translate that into strong performances in a live-game setting.
Key Players to Watch
Kaytron Allen, currently listed as a third-string running back alongside Jeremy McNichols on the unofficial depth chart, has drawn attention for his work ethic. His pass-protection skills, which may have limited his playing time previously, will be a focus as he aims to demonstrate development in a game scenario. Allen could be a valuable asset in short-yardage situations and may capitalize on the Dolphins’ defense.
Third-year tight end Colson Yankoff is making a strong case for a roster spot, despite teams typically carrying only two or three tight ends. Yankoff, who has been targeted only three times in his previous two NFL seasons, has had the opportunity to learn from Zach Ertz. His performance in training camp, particularly in 50-50 ball scenarios where he uses his size effectively, has impressed tight ends coach Wes Welker. Yankoff is in a competitive battle for a potential fourth tight end spot with players like Lawrence Cager, who has also shown growth this offseason.
The tight end group as a whole has been noted for its solid performance in camp, with Chig Okonkwo and Cager standing out. Cornerback Fabian Moreau rejoined the organization that drafted him in 2017 following Ahkello Witherspoon’s retirement. Moreau reunites with Daronte Jones, who coached the secondary in Minnesota last year. After recording no interceptions and 24 total tackles during his time in Minnesota, Moreau is looking to revitalize his career. The upcoming game against a rebuilding Dolphins offense offers him an opportunity to make a statement in his return to the team.
Offensive Line and Other Standouts
The Commanders’ offensive line performance during the joint practice with the Dolphins was a significant point of discussion. Despite the absence of Laremy Tunsil, the offensive line was described as solid, particularly in pass protection during team drills. Quarterback Jayden Daniels reportedly had sufficient time to survey his options without needing to scramble frequently. Chris Paul was highlighted among the starters for his improved footwork and quickness at the left guard spot.
While there were some negative plays, they were not deemed concerning for Daniels’ safety. In run blocking, the unit is still working through adjustments, which is expected given player movements and the absence of their center from most practices. The running game is anticipated to improve once Nick Allegretti returns to practice.
Other players who have made an impression include Odafe Oweh, who was frequently in the backfield during 11-on-11 drills, and Mike Sainristil, noted for his ability to find the ball.
