“Consumers should stop using the recalled Food Jars and Bottles immediately and contact Thermos to receive a free replacement pressure relief stopper or replacement Bottle, depending on the model,” said a representative from the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
This urgent recall affects more than 8 million food jars and bottles due to a defect that causes stoppers to eject forcefully. Among those impacted are approximately 5.8 million Stainless King Food Jars and 2.3 million Sportsman Food & Beverage Bottles, sold at retailers like Target and Walmart from March 2008 through July 2024.
The issue has led to severe injuries—three consumers have suffered permanent vision loss after being struck in the eye by an ejected stopper. Thermos received 27 injury reports related to this alarming defect.
The problem stems from a design flaw: the stoppers lack a pressure-relief mechanism, which allows dangerous pressure to build up inside the containers. “If perishable food or beverages are stored in the container for an extended period of time, the stopper can forcefully eject when opened, which can result in serious impact injury and laceration hazards to the consumer,” warned the CPSC.
Consumers are urged to take immediate action—stop using these products without delay. Thermos is prepared to provide replacements, but officials have not disclosed how long this process might take or if additional models could be affected.
As this situation unfolds, many are left questioning their kitchen safety practices and the reliability of food storage products. The CPSC’s alert serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance when it comes to consumer product safety.
