Practice Highlights from Oxnard
The Dallas Cowboys held their second day of training camp in Oxnard, California, with both offense and defense showing strong performances. Despite practicing without pads, the team engaged in spirited drills. The offense, led by Dak Prescott, continued to make plays, while the defense also responded effectively.
Prescott connected with CeeDee Lamb multiple times in the middle of the field, resulting in significant gains. He also involved Jonathan Mingo in the passing game, as Mingo competes for a spot on the 53-man roster. On the defensive side, DaRon Bland, a cornerback, had a notable practice, breaking up a pass intended for Brevyn Spann-Ford. Bland had previously mentioned his reps would be limited as he returns to playing shape, but he made the most of his time on Thursday.
Another defensive player, Sam Williams, demonstrated dominance during team drills. He showcased his versatility by running with running back Dominic Richardson on a wheel route and then stopping the same player in the backfield on the subsequent play. Williams also generated pressure from the left side. Wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling had an eventful day, including an early drop but later making a highlight catch over the middle on a crossing route. He is currently competing with younger receivers for a spot among the team’s receiving options.
Defensive Standouts and Rookie Impact
During the camp, some players are adjusting to new roles. Marist Liufau, for instance, has transitioned from inside linebacker to outside linebacker. Despite this change, he demonstrated his understanding of both positions during a single play, moving from inside linebacker to outside linebacker and then to the MIKE position post-snap.
In the cornerback group, while discussions often focus on the health of DaRon Bland and Shavon Revel, Cobie Durant drew attention for his performance. He maintained tight coverage on receivers, making it challenging for them to complete routes.
Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer specifically praised rookie third-round pick Jaishawn Barham for his performance on the opening day of camp. Schottenheimer highlighted Barham’s ability to shed blocks and his versatility to play both on and off the ball, even in helmet-only practices. Barham, who previously played at Maryland and Michigan, has experience as a linebacker and edge rusher. In his last year as an edge rusher, he recorded 32 tackles, 4 pass deflections, 4 sacks, and 1 forced fumble.
Under new defensive coordinator Christian Parker, Barham is seen as a versatile asset for the Cowboys’ defense. While he could remain an inside linebacker, there is potential for him to play on the edge. Although first-round picks Caleb Downs and Malachi Lawrence receive significant attention, Barham’s strong start to training camp suggests he could earn more recognition. He is expected to back up starting inside linebackers DeMarvion Overshown and Dee Winters, with opportunities to be part of the rotation and potentially contribute to special teams on kickoff and punt coverage.
The team aims to integrate Barham into the lineup gradually, allowing him to play a few snaps per game. The Cowboys’ defense, under Parker’s direction, is working towards improvement, with young players like Downs, Lawrence, and Barham identified as potential long-term starters.
