National Matcha Day Celebrates Tradition with a Modern Twist

Posted on 02.05.2026

On May 2nd, National Matcha Day invites everyone to sip on the rich history of matcha while enjoying modern flavors. Founded by Jade Leaf Matcha in 2021, this day honors the traditional Japanese tea ceremony and marks the start of the Spring tea harvest.

But this year, something exciting is brewing. Jade Leaf Matcha has partnered with Milk Bar to create two limited-edition treats that blend nostalgia with innovation. The Strawberry Matcha Cookie and Cereal Milk Matcha Latte are set to delight taste buds starting this May.

Key offerings:

The Strawberry Matcha Cookie pairs sweet strawberry notes with earthy matcha — available for just eight weeks. and The Cereal Milk Matcha Latte combines Jade Leaf’s premium matcha with Milk Bar’s iconic cereal milk.

With matcha sales climbing 86 percent in the past three years, it’s clear that people are embracing this green powerhouse as a caffeine alternative. Traditional preparation methods involve whisking powdered green tea into hot water, creating a frothy drink full of flavor and health benefits.

Daniel Woldar from Milk Bar notes, “Matcha can feel intimidating to people who are new to it. As the founders of National Matcha Day, our goal has always been to make matcha more approachable and accessible.” This partnership aims to demystify matcha while celebrating its roots.

Real matcha production is an art — it can only be cultivated in specific regions of Japan like Uji and Nishio. Yet, as its popularity grows globally, more people are finding joy in crafting their own matcha recipes at home.

The date of National Matcha Day aligns perfectly with Hachiju Hachiya, or the “88th Night,” which signifies an auspicious time for the Spring tea harvest in Japan. This connection deepens appreciation for what’s in each cup.

As Jade Leaf continues to lead as the top matcha brand in the U.S., they’re not just promoting a beverage; they’re sharing a cultural experience that bridges generations. This celebration is about more than just sipping tea; it’s about savoring history and innovation together.
