NASA’s Curiosity rover discovers complex organic molecules on Mars

Posted on 02.05.2026

NASA’s Curiosity rover has discovered a record number of complex organic molecules on Mars, raising hopes for past life on the planet. The rover found a total of 21 different organic molecules, including seven that had never been seen before.

The findings were made in Gale Crater, where the sampled rock formed about 3.5 billion years ago. This ancient site once held water, making it a prime candidate for studying the planet’s history. The Curiosity rover’s analysis employed a solvent called tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) in methanol to extract these organic compounds.

Key discoveries:

  • 21 different organic molecules identified on Mars.
  • Seven new molecules, including a nitrogen heterocycle.
  • The rock samples date back 3.5 billion years.
  • The findings suggest that Mars retained complex carbon material inside rocks for billions of years.

Amy Williams, a scientist involved with the mission, stated, “Our discovery not only expands the catalog of known molecules but tells us that some of the building blocks for life as we know it on Earth were also present on Mars in the ancient past.” This revelation fuels ongoing discussions about whether life ever existed beyond our planet.

Meanwhile, NASA is also advancing its technology for future missions. Recently, they successfully tested a next-generation electric thruster at their Jet Propulsion Lab, achieving power levels exceeding 120 kilowatts. This electric propulsion system uses high currents to electromagnetically accelerate lithium plasma — a significant step toward sending astronauts to Mars.

The upcoming rotorcraft mission to Titan is set to launch no earlier than July 2028. As scientists continue to explore both Mars and Titan, each discovery adds another piece to the puzzle of our solar system’s history and potential for life.
