Minimum Wage Advocates Push for $25 an Hour

Posted on 04.05.2026

In a bold move, progressive lawmakers have introduced a bill to raise the federal minimum wage to $25 an hour. This initiative, led by Reps. Delia Ramirez and Analilia Mejia, is backed by over 100 advocacy groups, including the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and One Fair Wage.

The Living Wage for All Act aims to address the growing disparity between wages and the cost of living, which has remained stagnant since 2009 when the current federal minimum wage was set at just $7.25. As inflation continues to rise, many workers find themselves struggling to make ends meet.

On March 15, 2023, advocates gathered in Washington D.C., rallying for higher wages. “This is a worker-led movement that has grown from the groundbreaking Fight for $15 into a nationwide push for a true living wage,” said Saru Jayaraman, president of One Fair Wage. The sentiment echoed through the crowd — workers deserve better.

Currently, cities like Los Angeles and New York are considering even more ambitious proposals. Both are eyeing a potential minimum wage of $30 an hour by 2030. These local efforts reflect a growing recognition of the need for fair compensation across various sectors.

But it’s not just urban areas feeling the pressure. In Boulder, Colorado, where the current minimum wage sits at $16.82, discussions are underway regarding changes to tipped wages as part of broader reforms aimed at increasing overall pay.

The support for this legislation isn’t just about numbers; it’s about people — those who toil under difficult conditions often without adequate compensation. Noah Finley from Illinois highlighted that his members have been struggling with even the state’s minimum wage of $15 an hour.

Key facts:

  • The current federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour.
  • Los Angeles and New York City are considering proposals to raise their minimum wages to $30 an hour.
  • One Fair Wage aims to advocate for wage increases in 25 states by 2026.

As these discussions unfold, advocates remain hopeful yet cautious. Shannon Aulabaugh remarked on the importance of ensuring that tip earners receive at least minimum wage regardless of changes made in legislation. The road ahead is long and filled with challenges, but one thing is clear: the fight for fair wages is far from over.
