Mehmet Oz Defers $91 Million in Medicaid Funding in Minnesota

Posted on 01.05.2026

Dr. Mehmet Oz announced that CMS is deferring $91 million in federal Medicaid funding to Minnesota on May 1, 2026, aimed at addressing serious fraud issues within the state’s healthcare programs.

The decision comes amid a backdrop of alarming numbers — $76 million of the deferred funds are linked to 14 service categories identified as particularly vulnerable to fraudulent activities. Recent investigations led to the execution of 22 search warrants across Minnesota, underscoring the scale of the problems at hand.

Oz emphasized that the federal government contributes approximately half of Medicaid funding, which grants CMS the authority to oversee and ensure proper spending. “This follows a pattern we can’t ignore,” he stated, reflecting on the systemic issues that have plagued Minnesota’s healthcare system. “When they’re not, we act.” The implications for the state are significant, especially as Medicare Advantage plans prepare for potential cuts in benefits due to rising costs and insufficient funding.

Key statistics:

  • $91 million in Medicaid funding deferred to Minnesota
  • $76 million tied to service categories susceptible to fraud
  • 22 search warrants executed during investigations

In light of these developments, Vice President JD Vance received praise from Oz for his leadership in tackling Medicaid fraud. However, concerns remain about how these funding cuts could affect those dependent on these services. As Susan Reilly noted, “When Medicare Advantage funding doesn’t keep pace with costs, seniors pay the price.”

The situation paints a troubling picture for many — with nearly 70 million people on Medicare, any shifts in funding can have far-reaching consequences. Kevin Gade warned that all insurers may cut back on benefits, with Humana likely facing the most severe reductions.

The upcoming changes are set against a broader context where Medicare Advantage plans account for a significant portion of revenue for major insurers like Humana and Aetna. The U.S. government plans a modest 2.48% increase in payments to these insurers for 2027, but it might not be enough to stave off cuts.
