May day protests

Posted on 01.05.2026

On May 1, 2026, thousands are expected to join an economic blackout for International Workers’ Day, demanding ‘no school, no work, no shopping’ across the United States. Activists have been vocal about their frustrations—rising living costs linked to the Iran war and ongoing immigration policies have fueled this year’s protests.

May Day, or International Workers’ Day, traces back more than a century to a pivotal period in U.S. labor history. It has long been a day for workers to unite and advocate for their rights. In recent years, its focus has shifted—especially since 2006—to include immigration issues as a key concern.

Key statistics:

  • 35 protests are scheduled in Michigan alone.
  • A total of 3,500 events are planned nationwide under the May Day Strong coalition.
  • Teachers’ unions in North Carolina have given educators the day off to participate in demonstrations.

Leah Greenberg of Indivisible emphasized the importance of collective action: “We are asking people to take a step into further exerting their power in all aspects of their lives – as workers, as students…” The sentiment resonates deeply among many who feel overshadowed by corporate interests and political decisions that seem detached from everyday realities.

The European Trade Union Confederation has also weighed in on the matter, stating plainly: “Working people refuse to pay the price for Donald Trump’s war in the Middle East.” This perspective highlights a growing frustration among workers who feel their livelihoods are being compromised by broader geopolitical conflicts.

Voices from the front lines:

Stacy Davis Gates, president of the Chicago Teachers Union, remarked on their role: “As educators, we feel a very real accountability to the young people in the families that we serve.” This accountability reflects a commitment that goes beyond mere instruction. and Nurses at University Medical Center New Orleans announced a five-day strike for a fair contract—an act of solidarity echoing throughout various sectors.

The May Day Strong coalition includes labor unions and immigrant rights groups united under one common goal: advocating for workers’ rights and social justice. As activists prepare for this year’s protests, it’s clear that they are not just rallying against economic challenges but also calling for systemic change.
