Kacey Musgraves album review

Posted on 01.05.2026

Kacey Musgraves is back with a new album, Middle of Nowhere, released in 2026. This seventh album sees her returning to her rural roots, intertwining traditional country sounds with elements from pop and Americana.

After the success of Golden Hour in 2018, fans eagerly anticipated this new chapter. The album opens with a rich tapestry of sounds, subtly arranged and influenced by western swing and traditional Mexican music. It’s a testament to her growth as an artist while still honoring her beginnings.

Among the standout tracks is “Horses & Divorces,” featuring Miranda Lambert. Their voices blend seamlessly, bringing a fresh dynamic that resonates with listeners. Then there’s “Uncertain, TX,” where Kacey shares the spotlight with Willie Nelson—his seasoned voice adds depth to the storytelling.

Musgraves explores themes of loneliness and self-reflection throughout the album. In “Loneliest Girl,” she sings, “I’m so lonely with a capital H,” capturing that familiar ache in a way only she can. The production leans more toward pop here, yet it retains its country essence.

Another notable track is “Dry Spell,” which some have dubbed a “femcel anthem.” It’s raw and real—a reflection of modern struggles wrapped in catchy melodies. Kacey’s choice to sing in a lower register for most of the album gives it an almost dejected tone, inviting listeners into her world.

The collaboration with Gregory Alan Isakov on “Coyote” adds yet another layer—his haunting vocals complement hers beautifully. And then there’s “Rhinestoned,” described as a corrective for misery; it’s an upbeat reminder that joy can be found even in tough times.

Musgraves has crafted an album that feels both personal and universal. It’s safe to say she’s riding her own horse and will keep freely picking and choosing whichever roads she wants to take on her musical journey.

As fans dive into Middle of Nowhere, they’ll find a mix of nostalgia and innovation, proving once again why Kacey Musgraves is a defining voice in contemporary country music.
