Dave Ramsey’s Unconventional Christmas Gift

Posted on 01.05.2026

“The lack of meaning in life is one of the biggest epidemics that we’re facing today,” said Dave Ramsey, reflecting on an unconventional Christmas gift he orchestrated. This year, he decided to forgive millions in distressed consumer debt for strangers, a gesture that left both his employees and the recipients profoundly moved.

Ramsey Solutions purchased about $10 million worth of distressed consumer debt for roughly $259,000. The plan was simple yet impactful: his employees would call eight people each to inform them their debt was forgiven. Imagine receiving such news—an unexpected weight lifted off shoulders, a new lease on life.

The atmosphere at Ramsey Solutions was charged with emotion as employees made those calls. Each conversation was filled with disbelief, gratitude, and tears. As one employee recounted, “Hearing the joy in their voices made it all worthwhile.” Ramsey emphasized that success or money is not designed to give you meaning or happiness. Instead, it’s about making a difference.

This initiative aligns with Ramsey’s broader philosophy on personal finance. His recent millionaire survey revealed insights into wealth building—89% of millionaires surveyed were first generation, meaning they did not inherit their money. Surprisingly, 79% received no inheritance whatsoever from parents or other family members. This challenges common assumptions about wealth and success.

According to Ramsey’s findings, the formula for building wealth involves consistently investing in a 401(k) and buying a home—then paying it off. He believes that claiming Social Security early can also make sense for those who are debt-free and have savings. “Taking Social Security early is usually a really good idea,” he stated, especially if retirement health issues are anticipated.

In light of this unique approach to giving back, many wonder how such acts influence the culture within Ramsey Solutions. Employees reported feeling more connected to their work and mission after witnessing the direct impact of their efforts on people’s lives. “We’ve all got a shot,” Ramsey remarked, emphasizing that everyone deserves a chance at financial freedom.

This Christmas gesture may represent more than just forgiveness—it’s a reminder of the importance of empathy in personal finance and beyond. As the year wraps up, the emotional impact of these calls lingers on, perhaps inspiring others to consider how they too can contribute to changing lives.
