Citizenship: Millions of Americans Seek Canadian Amid Law Change

Posted on 01.05.2026

A new Canadian law that took effect on December 15 allows millions of Americans to qualify for dual citizenship, igniting a surge in applications from those dissatisfied with the political climate in the U.S. and seeking better job opportunities.

In just over a month since the law’s implementation, 1,480 people have confirmed their Canadian citizenship by descent. Before this change, only around 200 cases were handled per year by immigration attorneys. Now, the demand is overwhelming—some attorneys report handling up to 20 consultations per day.

This shift toward dual citizenship isn’t a mere trend; it reflects deeper issues within the U.S. Many are motivated by political dissatisfaction. Michelle Cunha, an American seeking Canadian citizenship, expressed her frustration: “I put in my best effort for 30 years. I have done everything that I possibly can to make the United States what it promises the world to be, a place of freedom, a place of equality.”

Canadians have mixed feelings about this influx. Some worry that Americans might seek citizenship without strong ties to Canada. Yet others see it as an opportunity—Amandeep Hayer remarked, “You are Canadian, and you’re considered to be one your whole life.” This sentiment captures a unique aspect of Canadian identity that many now wish to embrace.

Key statistics regarding the recent surge:

  • Processing times for Canadian citizenship applications are around 10 months.
  • The application fee for proof of Canadian citizenship is 75 Canadian dollars ($55).
  • Last year, 24,500 Americans gained dual U.S.-Canada citizenship.

While some view renouncing U.S. citizenship as a simplification of their lives abroad—especially due to stringent regulations like the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA)—others are cautious. One expert noted that “renouncing your US citizenship is not a guarantee that you won’t end up being ‘part of a dictatorship.'” This highlights the complexities involved in such decisions.

The motivations behind this rush for Canadian citizenship are clear: political factors and job opportunities drive many Americans to seek refuge in a country they view as more stable and welcoming. As Maureen Sullivan put it: “When I first heard about the bill, I couldn’t believe it. It was like this little gift that fell in my lap.” For many, this gift represents hope—a chance at a new beginning amid uncertainty back home.
