Posted on 04.05.2026

Two U.S. service members are missing after a hiking accident during the African Lion military exercise in Morocco on May 2, 2026. They disappeared near a cliffside close to the Atlantic Ocean, prompting an immediate search and rescue operation involving both U.S. and Moroccan forces.

The soldiers were reported missing around 9 p.m., while they were off duty, enjoying their time in the scenic Cap Draa Training Area in Tan Tan. The ongoing investigation has yet to confirm specific details about how the accident occurred.

This incident unfolds during the African Lion exercise, which is the largest annual joint military exercise conducted by the U.S. on the continent, involving over 5,500 personnel from more than 30 nations. This year’s Moroccan phase began in late April and was set to conclude in early May.

Key facts:

  • The African Lion exercise has been running since 2004.
  • Previous incidents during these exercises have resulted in fatalities.
  • The incident is under investigation, and search efforts are ongoing.

Initial reports suggest that the two soldiers may have fallen into the ocean, raising concerns among their families and colleagues back home. “Our focus is on the service members involved and their families,” stated a representative from AFRICOM.

A U.S. defense official added, “This incident is not related to terrorism.” The presence of both American and Moroccan forces underscores regional security cooperation—an essential aspect of this extensive military exercise.

The search continues as officials work tirelessly to locate the missing service members. Meanwhile, families await news with bated breath, hoping for a positive outcome amid this distressing situation.
